Renfe extends contract with CAF for additional Media Distancia electric trains

As part of Renfe’s Fleet Renewal Plan, 32 Media Distancia electric trains have been ordered from Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) for €190 million.
As part of the initial contract, CAF was to supply 28 electric trains, a deal worth €290 million, however, with the further increase of 32 trains, Renfe will acquire a total of 60 new Media Distancia trains of latest generation, more sustainable and efficient.
Renfe's expenditure in fleet renewal is unprecedented in Europe. The organisation claims no other railway operator comes close to investing as much money in fresh stock. The figure amounts to €4,509 million for the manufacture of 436 trains, the remodeling of another 57 trains and the manufacture of 50 locomotives.
