Metrolinx is working with northern partners to upgrade part of the GO Train fleet
07/02/2025
Metrolinx has announced two new agreements-in-principle to refurbish 302 GO Transit bi-level rail coaches in northern Ontario, supporting hundreds of manufacturing jobs.

The project will see 181 train cars upgraded at the Alstom plant in Thunder Bay, while Ontario Northland will retrofit another 121 cars at its facility in North Bay.
The refurbishment will modernise the train cars with new seating, flooring, walls, train doors, upgraded washrooms, USB-equipped outlets, and improved heating and air conditioning systems. These upgrades will extend the service life of the coaches by 20 years and support GO Transit’s goal of delivering two-way, all-day train service on its busiest routes.
In addition to the bi-level coach upgrades, Ontario Northland will refurbish several F59 locomotives purchased by Metrolinx from Metrolink in Southern California. These locomotives will enhance GO Transit operations and provide spare parts for maintaining the existing fleet.
Metrolinx continues to invest in transit improvements to reduce congestion and provide more reliable service for commuters across the region.
